Alex McKee knows exactly when his love of bonsai began – it was 14 years ago when he happened to walk in to the Ballarat Bonsai Society’s annual exhibition at the Robert Clark Centre in the Botanical Gardens.

The exhibition has been held in Ballarat on the first weekend in November for the past 35 years, introducing thousands of people to the world of bonsai.
Mr McKee said the attraction of bonsai for him was the ability to style miniature landscapes.
“I just like trees in general, but I like to create different styles, different shapes, groups, forests and rock plantings. I enjoy the whole aspect of landscaping in bonsai, creating a full picture.”
The event draws people from across the state who appreciate the art of creating miniature trees, with about 400 adults and countless children enjoying the 80 bonsai trees, and other plantings, across the weekend.
The Ballarat Bonsai Society will also hold a display at the Creswick Garden Lovers Weekend on November 10 and 11.
