A new group of shoppers in Buninyong is joining the rebellion against the plastic-filled isles of the supermarket.
The Buninyong Community Collective opened its doors for the first time on Tuesday, in response to a growing desire to source local produce and reduce plastic waste.
Committee of management member Hayley Quach said the collective offered a small selection of produce that was set to grow, with a focus on sourcing food locally.
“Buying locally is a priority, so are the ideas of sustainability and no waste, and to be a group to bring the community together,” she said.
Members can join the collective for a yearly fee and have access to products at a competitive price, with only a small markup from wholesale.

Shoppers bring their own containers and bags to fill with produce while weighing and recording amounts as they go.
Flour and pasta from Powlett Hill and olive oil from Manna Hill were some of the staples on offer for opening day.
Shoppers can request specific items which will expand the range of food as membership numbers grow.
The current focus is on dry goods, with plans to soon introduce fresh produce and refrigerated foods in the long term.
Ms Quach said the collective has had a ‘huge’ amount of community interest, with more than 200 followers on its Facebook page.
“I think people were ready for it,” Ms Quach said.
“A lot of people are getting used to shopping in this way with other cooperatives and the opening of Source Bulk Foods. I think people are really liking the idea of bringing their own containers.”
The beginning of the Buninyong Community Collective comes as an increasing number of people are joining community food collectives in Ballarat, Creswick and Hepburn and plastic free store the Source Bulk Foods opened in October.
The Buninyong Community Collective will run from 9am to 11am and 5pm to 7pm every Tuesday at 405 Scott Street Buninyong.
