The champion jockey is married to Cathy Payne, sister of Ballarat’s – and first-ever female jockey to ride a Melbourne Cup winning horse – Michelle Payne.
As McEvoy rode Godolphin Stable’s Cross Counter passed Marmelo in the final 200 metres of the race, it marked the first Cup victory for the English stable and will be added to McEvoy’s other wins in 2000 and 2016.
McEvoy also enjoyed success earlier in the day, riding Chris Waller-trained horse Shraaoh to victory in race four.
It was another enjoyable day for the Payne family, husband of Maree, Brett Prebble rode Legend Of Condor to victory in race five at Flemington.
Meanwhile, decorated Ballarat trainer Darren Weir had one winner for the day.
Fifty Stars finished beautifully in the wet conditions to win race three, Ben Allen on board.
His only entry in the Melbourne Cup, Red Cardinal, finished last of all finishes.
“Just raced a little keen on the slow pace and when it was time to go he just didn’t have enough to finish it off,” jockey Damien Oliver said.
