Entries in this year’s Ballarat Show Cake and Biscuit Judging were inspected on Wednesday.
While entry numbers were down from last year, the quality remained at its peak.
“The quality of product is sensational,” competition steward Jennifer Mitchell said.
“There are some highly competitive entries here – some of them are looking nearly perfect.”
The stories around the competition is what makes the event so exciting and fun for Mrs Mitchell.
“We see people who have competitions with each other. We've got a married couple who both enter to see who makes the best ginger fluff,” she said.
It’s not also sweets on display, with many savory categories such as pastry and loaves of bread up for judging.
Kirsty Beckett has been judging the baking competition for 47 years and is looking at the open and children’s decorated cake section.
“This is just something I like to come by and do every year,” she said.
“The quality of entries are looking good, but numbers are a bit down, especially in secondary school. The more young people we can get involved in baking the better.”
The public will have to wait and see for themselves which delectable desert and impressive pastry will rise to the top and be crowned best by attending this weekend’s Ballarat Spring Show.
