A car has crashed into the roadside wire rope barriers and come to rest in shrubs on the side of the road.
Emergency services were first called to the scene to the east of Bungaree about 8.25am.
There were initial reports of a fire as a result of the crash, however it was not the case when they arrived.
Sergeant Travis Barber said the car was initially drifting to the right-hand side of the road, scraping agaionst the barriers at the speed limit of 110km/h.
The silver sedan has then over-corrected, hit the left-hand barrier, lost control about lanes and came to rest facing the opposite direction to which it was travelling.
It missed a tree by only a small distance.
The 71-year-old Ballan man has been taken to hospital with head lacerations.
It was the only one car involved in the crash.
One lane of the freeway is blocked to traffic, with significant traffic delays.
