After basking in a gorgeous 29 degrees on Monday, Ballarat is set to experience the other end of the spectrum by Thursday with the mercury plummeting to just 12, making it one of the coldest November days on record.

But if we’re looking for records it will need to be really cold, with the lowest ever recorded temperature in Ballarat in November being 8.3 degrees on November 16, 1983.

But given this year has already seen a record coldest day in one month in July, then the possibility remains if the promised rain comes and cloud fails to lift.

Ballarat can expect to reach 25 degrees today before a late thunderstorm sees the temperature fall. The weather bureau is predicting an 80 per cent chance of storms bringing up to 20mm of rain, meaning the evening commute could be treacherous in some parts where isolated storms are likely to fall.  

The predicted storms have also brought warnings of thunderstorms asthma, with people with breathing difficulties urged to remain indoors if they can.

However, if there is some good news to come from a frightful couple of days, it’s that the pollen count is expected to be low after reaching high levels on Monday.

It looks set to be a cool Ballarat Cup and State Election day with predictions for temperatures in Ballarat around about 17 degrees.

But fortunately we should not see a repeat of last year’s Ballarat Cup Day storms  with just a small chance of rain predicted for Saturday.
