Committee for Ballarat has secured Geldof as a guest speaker for its Round Table Dinner in March.
When asked why the committee had decided to bring Geldof to Ballarat, chief executive Melanie Robertson said ‘why not?’
"Of course we can host an international star, and why not? It is about trying to lift our vision as to what Ballarat can be,” she said. “We must learn to challenge ourselves, be willing to fight for a cause and to align for the purpose of getting things done.”
Geldof is widely recognised for his activism and anti-poverty efforts in Africa. He co-founded the charity music group Band Aid to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia and organised charity super concert Live Aid in the 1980s.
Ms Robertson said Geldof will inspire and provoke dinner attendees to question ‘what is our legacy’.
