Darmody joins the emerging Cats after one season back with North, where he was limited to two senior appearances – both finals – after pre-season hamstring surgery.
Newlyn president Simon Dwyer is as delighted with the signing as North Ballarat coach Shane Skontra is disappointed to be losing the versatile key position player.
Dwyer said Darmody had links with the Cats through the likes of friend and forrmer North City teammate Lou Campana, and Myles Sewell and Steve Clifton, who were at North Ballarat Roosters in the VFL at the same time as him.
Darmody returned to North Ballarat City after two Hampden league premierships in as many years with Koroit – recruited as a key forward.
His injury this year meant he was unable to return until late in the season, with four reserves games preparing him for City’s finals campaign.
Despite his goalkicking prowess, North used him in defence.
Darmody’s arrival heads another vigorous recruiting campaign by Newlyn after it finished seventh this year with 10 wins.
The Cats defeated Hepburn by two points in an elimination final before losing a semi-final to Gordon.
Darmody’s exit from North Ballarat follows the departure of ruckman Nathan Dunstan and possible loss of Sam Dunstan.
