Trainer Mick Price and jockey Zac Spain struck first at the Ballarat Cup meeting on Saturday with Nariko ($6.60) taking out the Hertz Ballarat Mares BM78 (1200m).
The four-year-old claimed her fourth career win at start 13 by beating Tony McEvoy-trained Miss Wahoo over a length.
Nariko is a mare by Not A Single Doubt and was bought for $45,000 at the 2016 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.
RACE 2
When I Am Queen arrived from the New Zealand stable of Stephen Marsh, Cranbourne trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young set two early objectives – a metropolitan win and blacktype success.
I Am Queen ($5.50) ticked the first box by taking out the $60,000 Global Turf Handicap, 1100m.
The 4yo mare, which raced twice in NZ, has now had two wins in five Australian starts and on each occasion raced off a freshen up – a pattern Busuttin indicated he would continue.
RACE 3
Mornington trainer Pat Carey will likely send Khartoum for another crack at the Pakenham Cup after his impressive victory at Ballarat on Saturday.
The win was just the horse’s second in a career that spans 20 outings.
Khartoum ran a narrow second in last year’s Pakenham Cup as a $31 outsider and Carey said it’s likely he’ll be given the chance to go one better in a fortnight’s time.
“He was in very good form last year about this time and he ran second in the Pakenham Cup and he ran very, very well in the Bendigo Cup, well out of his class,” Carey said.
“I would have thought that would be the right race for him (Pakenham Cup).”
Carey paid tribute to jockey Fred Kersley for his ride in Saturday’s Champions Estate BM78 Handicap (2300m).
“Every time I opened my mouth to say something in the run, he actually heard it. He peeled off the fence at the right time and every time the horse in front of him got challenged, he took it with him and never lost his position,” he said.
Khartoum ($9) beat Darren Weir-trained The Gatting Ball by a length, with Lee and Shannon Hope’s Tavonian another length-and-a-half away in third.
A five-year-old gelding by Helenus, Khartoum’s only other win came all the way back in September 2017 in a maiden.
This year’s Pakenham Cup will be run on Saturday, December 8.
On a quirky note, the clerk of the course horse at Saturday’s meeting also raced as Khartoum.
Darren Weir and Daryl Brown previously trained the horse, which won five of 41 career starts for $57,850 in prizemoney.
Meanwhile, young racecaller Dayne Barry had a day he will never forget on Saturday.
Barry, a nephew of Weir, had his first metropolitan call in the Magic Millions 2YO Clockwise Classic (1000m).
“I think I got through it okay, but I was fairly nervous before the start," he told racing.com.
"I'm just glad I got through it... I'm just grateful that I got the opportunity.
"Definitely inside I had the butterflies going. Once the race started, I wasn't too bad. You sort of forget about all of it and you have just got to do your job and call the race."
Michael Moroney-trained Hawker Hurricane won the $200,000 race.
The 15-year-old has been calling since the age of 12.
Barry’s day got even better when Weir won the Ballarat Cup with Kiwia. He was involved in the post-race celebrations with family and friends.
RACE 4
Flemington trainer Michael Moroney has two possible contenders for the $2m Magic Millions 2yo Classic on the Gold Coast early in the new year after saluting with debutant Hawker Hurricane in Ballarat on Saturday.
Hawker Hurricane ($6.50) charged home to take out the $200,000 Magic Millions 2yo Clockwise Classic, 1000m.
Moroney also saddled up Alburq ($31) for third, while Charvet ($9) split the stablemates.
Assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said the Ballymore Stables operation at Flemington now had two youngsters worthy of consideration for a Gold Coast campaign in January.
Turnbull said the colts were two of the stable's most advanced 2yos.
He said there were no special immediate plans for Hawker Hurricane and Alburq, with Moroney likely to just keep ticking them over.
Hawker Hurricane, which went away by almost a length, was a $150,000 buy at the Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling sales.
"If they keep going the right way we'll head north.
"You can't dismiss what they've done. As long as they stay in tact physically, we'll certainly head that way," Turnbull.
Alburq made the running and was only run down by stablemate Hawker Hurricane in the closing stages.
Jockey Mark Zahra settled Hawker Hurrican towards the back of the field on the rails before working his way through the field after turning for home.
The Gai Waterhouse-Adrian Bott-trained Not A Royal Doubt was sent out a $3.30 favourite, but settled last after being slow out of the barrier amd was never in contention in beating just one home.
Ballarat Turf Club CEOr Lachlan McKenzie had no doubt this was the best edtion of the classic.to date.
RACE 5
Co-trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace have high hopes for The Closer, which claimed the $150,000 Polytrack VOBIS Gold Eureka Stockade (1400m).
Ridden by Linda Meech, The Closer ($5) won by a big space over Winning Partner, with Bricktop third.
Eustace said the horse was a stakes class filly and expected her to now be given a spell.
“I’d say we will probably pop her away now with a view to the autumn or Queensland. We have always felt she will get a trip, we’ve kept her nice and relaxed and there’s a nice race in her for sure,” he said.
The Closer, a three-year-old by Dundeel, has won two of her three career starts.
Eustace said she had shown the stable that she was a smart horse when winning on debut at Geelong back in July.
That impressive performance was followed by a down-the-track finish in a group 3 event at Flemington on November 8.
RACE 6
Levi Kavanagh-trained Kentucky Breeze ($6.50) returned to a rowsing reception after winning the Suez McKellar Mile, 1600m.
Leading the cheer squad was Rod Whateley from the Go Wild (2) syndicate - donned in a navy blue shirt and new black and white checkered tie to match the racing colours of Kentucky Breeze.
Whateley said his involvement in the 4yo - his first experience in racehorse ownership - had come via his wife, who gave him his share as a birthday present
And no wonder he and his fellow syndicate members are having a good time.
Kentucky Breeze has now won three of 10 starts for almost $150,000 in stakes.
RACE 7
Haunted won a drama-filled running of The Haymarket Ballarat BM84 Handicap (1400m).
Both Shintaro and Redefine were scratched after issues in the barrier stalls before the start of the race, and while Haunted was vetted prior to the jump, he was passed fit to run.
The James Cummings-trained galloper was well rated by jockey Dwayne Dunn, who raced away to beat Archie Alexander’s Chippenham and Muraahib, which is trained by David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig.
That success made it a winning double for Dunn, who had won earlier aboard I Am Queen.
Haunted has won five of 10 career starts for more than $120,000 in prizemoney.
RACE 8 – BALLARAT CUP
It’s not the most prestigious race Darren Weir has won, nor is it the richest, but Saturday’s Ballarat Cup triumph is perhaps one of the master trainer’s most special.
Weir produced a six-horse attack on his hometown cup and it was the progressive Kiwia that gave him his first win in the event since 2004.
Kiwia ($8.50) needed a perfect ride from Irishman John Allen and he got it. Allen immediately positioned the horse on the rail from a wide barrier and hugged the fence throughout the 2200m trip. The 2016 Ballarat Cup winner Pilote D’Essai booted well clear rounding the home turn, but Kiwia chased hard and by the 100m mark had reeled him in.
The Gerry Ryan-owned son of Reset eventually won by one-and-three-quarters of a length to Pilote D’Essai, with Life Less Ordinary running on into third.
Weir was cheered as he walked into the mounting yard to speak about his triumph and was quick to praise the performance of Allen.
“It was some sort of ride,” Weir said.
“I had a guy come up to me that had walked the track and said ‘if you can, get on the fence down the back’.
“I don’t know how he did it from out there, but he got on the fence down the back.
“When that leader kicked, I thought he’ll take a bit of catching, but (Allen) just summed it up beautifully.”
Weir said the writing was on the wall following Kiwia’s luckless effort in the group 3 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown last week. And despite his hesitations about running the five-year-old on a wet track, Kiwia showed his class to claim his first win since October 2017.
Lord Fandango ran last after a tough trip for Ballarat trainer Archie Alexander, while fellow local Matt Cumani scratched One More Try from the race on Saturday morning.
RACE 9
Regan Bayliss’ dashing ride on Pilote D’Essai was thwarted by Darren Weir and John Allen, but the young hoop got one back with his performance aboard Bel Sonic ($9) in the Magic Millions 3&4YO Classic (1100m).
Bayliss sat back in the field aboard the Jason Warren-trained speedster, which unleashed a big finale to charge over the top of the highly-fancied Platinum Angel in the shadows of the post.
"It was a good feeling getting Johnny and Weiry on the line, that's for sure," Bayliss said.
After the race, Bayliss outlined his plan to beat the Weir/Allen combination.
"He has got a devastating turn of foot when he is right and showed that today," Bayliss told racing.com.
"I just wanted to stalk Platinum Angel wherever it went and they rolled along at a nice tempo.
"I just stalked Johnny (John Allen on Platinum Angel) wherever he went and peeled off his back at about the 200m. And this fella, once he got mobile, he was strong right through the line. It was a good win."
Bel Sonic raced on the Gold Coast in January for the rich Magic Millions Guineas, but finished unplaced.
Warren plans to take the gelding back there for either the Magic Millions Cup or the sprint race on the same program on January 12.
“He really let go well today, he was always forward and we were confident in the horse,” Warren said.
Warren, who is based in Mornington, said the horse had endured some issues with his feet in recent times, but was now in good order.
“I think it’s probably the best we’ve had him for quite a while,” he said.
Bel Sonic, a four-year-old by Bel Esprit, has now won four of 11 starts. The horse has won close to $350,000 in prizemoney.
RACE 10
Cranbourne trainer Mick Bell describes classy sprinter Jungle Edge as the horse of a lifetime.
“He’s taken us all around.Australia.”
Jungle Edge ($3.20 favourite) rounded out his spring with an effortless win in the $70,000 No Fuss Event Hire Tonks Plate, 1200m – his 15th career success of rain affected ground.
It was a massive drop in class for Jungle Edge after contesting group 1 sprints, the Moir Stakes and Manikato Stakes, and he showed his appreciation for it.
