Nikkita Thomas, 26, was remanded in custody on Friday after the Ballarat Magistrates Court was not satisfied she had shown exceptional circumstances for bail.

The court was told Thomas, who is 15 weeks pregnant, co-accused Teagan Broadway-Marks and an unidentified man allegedly went to the Rogers Court house at 5.10am on September 23.

Police informant Detective Senior Constable Scott Howard said Thomas and Broadway-Marks, 23, kicked down the front door and entered the house while the victim was asleep.

He said an argument occurred in the hallway between the accused and another man before the victim woke and realised who was inside her house.

Police allege the victim grabbed a knife as she walked down the hallway and a struggle happened between her and the accused.

Detective Senior Constable Howard said the victim was struck with an axe in her back a number of times before she was hit with a hammer, causing a broken arm.

He said the victim received three stab wounds and her arm was surgically repaired with pins and plates.

Broadway-Marks, Thomas and the unidentified male allegedly attended the same property the day before but was refused entry.

The court was told Thomas allegedly attended the house on both occasions because the victim threatened to harm her dog and belongings within 20 hours. 

Police opposed Thomas’ application for bail, saying she posed an unacceptable risk to the victim and community’s safety, and re-offending while on bail.  

Detective Senior Constable Howard said Thomas was on bail to live in Moe at the time of the alleged offending.

“I don’t think there are any conditions that could alleviate the risks,” Detective Senior Constable Howard said.

Thomas’ defence counsel said her post-pregnancy needs could not be met in custody, she had family support, a stable address and the prosecution case was not strong.

But magistrate Letizia Torres said the prosecution case was strong and refused Thomas bail. She adjourned the case to January 10.

Thomas faces nine charges, including aggravated home invasion, aggravated burglary, intentionally causing serious injury and assault in company.
