The last time the temperature was so high was on January 28 when the temperature reached 36.7 degrees.
Incredibly, only three times for the whole of last summer did the mercury reach more than Friday’s top.
After a big bushfire took hold in hot, but relatively benign conditions near Buninyong on Thursday, firefighters have spent the day on guard against possible flare ups.
Other than a small fire reported near Greendale, the day has been relatively incident free, with most focus being on an out of control fire burning near Little River.
There is relief on the way in the coming days after a dry change overnight with a forecast for for 27 degrees on Saturday, 24 Sunday and 21 Monday.
