The school’s annual Christmas fair drew 150 stallholders, up an extra 20 marketsellers, in its biggest line-up with bumper crowds to match on Friday night. This event has become so popular since it began eight years ago, there is now a lengthy waiting list for a coveted market spot – even after adding more sellers this year.
For long-time stallholder Christa, this market was a little bittersweet. Christa has been making jams and pickles for Pleasant Street primary markets the past 25 years, going back to when they were monthly events, but now she is ready to retire.
“It started because we had too many raspberries one year and decided to make jam to sell. It snowballed from there,” Christa said. “This has just been such a great market. There’s always a great atmosphere.”
The market featured a wide array of crafts, food, and live music.
Pleasant Street grade fours Taylah said the market was a great night out.
“You can go around with friends and buy heaps of stuff – mostly stuff for our selves, like showbags,” Taylah said.
A big highlight for pupils was Santaland with the chance to take a photo and have an audience with Mr Claus before he starts packing his sleigh. Grade fives had the responsibility to create Santaland this year, making him feel at home and ensuring clear signs showing people where to go.
The school community has been planning the market for about five months with stallholder registrations open from August. In a massive market-day exercise, all class equipment is packed into two rooms.
Pleasant Street assistant principal Helen Romeril said the market was an incredible undertaking from all staff and parents to create a special night.
