The rising golf stars were honoured to receive such an award, which will help them advance their games.
The scholarship gives the respective players a host of opportunities and prizes.
An ‘inside the ropes’ experience at the 2019 Vic Open is perhaps the one that has the youngsters the most excited.
This will allow the players to get an insight into the top-level tournament, including the opportunity to be an on-course scorer or score board carrier for the final group during the Vic Open.
Among the other prizes are a full game analysis with Ballarat Golf Club professional David Wallis and a membership to BGC for the calendar year. A once in a lifetime half-day experience at the PGA centre for learning and performance including Tracman ball flight analysis, putt lab analysis, golf specific physical screening and golf fitness and condition training – as well as a package from leading golf brand Titleist.
Both young guns were stoked to receive the scholarship and were looking forward to the benefits it will have on their games.
“(I can’t wait to) have an amazing experience at the 2019 Vic Open being 'inside the ropes' and learning so much during the tournament by being on-course among professional golfers. This would be a great day as a golfer and spectator,” 11-year-old Howlett said.
“I just love getting better, everyday I try and get better, all the prizes that come with this scholarship will help me be a better golfer.
“The opportunity for the Vic Open, that will be really good, just to experience that.”
While Cassidy, 12, shared the same view.
“I’m hoping with the help of the Ballarat Golf Club junior scholarship I will be able to have better access to coaches and practice facilities so I can work on my game,” Cassidy said.
“I was really excited I got selected and I’m looking forward to going to the Vic Open.”
Both youngsters got introduced to golf through their fathers, and play at least 3-4 times throughout the week.
The duo hold ambitions to take their games further one day, but at the moment, it is all about enjoying and improving on the course.
“I’m not really sure if I want to do it as a career, I just enjoy playing,” Cassidy said.
“I’d love to be a professional golfer in the future, but I’m taking it one step at a time,” Howlett added.
Last year Ballarat Golf Club awarded just the one junior scholarship – Rose Britt receiving it.
This year the club decided to hand one to a junior boy and girl.
"I have had great benefit from the scholarship because it has not only made my golf better but it has given me the confidence to play in more tournaments and be more involved in local golf,” Britt said.
