Students at the Woodmans Hill and Mount Rowan campuses finished on Wednesday and when they return next year their schools will be stand-alone government secondary colleges, not part of the multi-campus Ballarat Secondary College.
The schools began to forge separate identities at the start of the school year when the college's Wendouree campus was renamed Mount Rowan and the east campus became Woodmans Hill, and each adopted new and different school uniforms.
On January 1 the split will be formalised.
"It's about providing both local communities with their own stand alone government school," said Woodman's Hill principal Simon Haber.
"Both schools offer year seven to 12, the full educational provision of a secondary college, for their local communities of Ballarat East and Wendouree."
Ballarat Secondary College was formed in 1993 when Ballarat East Secondary College, Wendouree Secondary College and Midlands Secondary College merged to form the new school.
Mr Haber said both schools had seen a significant increase in enrolments for next year, with major rebuilding programs underway at both sites.

"Enrolments have significantly increased and both schools are undergoing a major rebuild program to support that growth, so both schools will have brand new facilities that will be completed next year to support their establishment."
Mount Rowan has received a $12 million investment to build new classrooms, a new arts/crafts space, canteen, student lounge and performing arts auditorium.
Woodman's Hill is mid-way through a $6.2 million build of a new performing arts centre housing a 250-seat auditorium, cafe and home economics classroom, and new science and technology buildings.
