As gift cards become a more popular option for Christmas, the Australian Retailers Association predicted Victorians forked out $786 million in just 24 hours across the public holiday.
Recently-engaged couple Sam Smith and Molly Cove said hitting the sales had become a Boxing Day tradition.
“We gave each other gift cards for Christmas, and we thought we would buy while it’s on sale,” Ms Cove said.
“We bought some Christmas items for next year, as well as some half price clothes, just getting ready for summer,” Mr Smith said.
Ballaray Myer store manager Peter Griffin said cosmetics, women’s and menswear, and homewares were the most popular purchases.
