Someone took several paint cans and “smashed them up” at the crossing at Mostyn Street at about 3.30am, Leading Senior Constable Wayne Cairnes said.
“It will be an absolute nightmare once cars start going through it,” he said.
“It looks like they’ve taken the paint cans from somewhere and, from the footpath, they’ve thrown the cans and smashed them open.”
Police were contacting the Mount Alexander Shire to begin the cleanup. At this stage LSC Cairnes expected that to take place later this morning and said it could involve temporarily closing all lanes.

Police were reviewing CCTV vision from the area as their investigations continued.
