Fairytale siblings Hansel and Gretel will find themselves in a different house this week as they seek to outwit the witch at Housey Housey. It’s the first time the Armstrong Street venue has hosted a family production.

“It’s a different concept because it’s not a traditional theatre,” said director Miranda McDonald. “Because it’s a kids show it’s a bit informal, with people seated on the floor, the audience can call out and parents can be a bit more relaxed than in a formal theatre – it’s what kids theatre should be.”
This production of Hansel and Gretel follows the traditional story but with original songs and some modern touches including on-trend dance moves. Local actors Nick Oakes and Maddi Holland perform the title roles, with Melbourne actor Adam Turnbull playing the witch.
“Our witch … won’t scare children. Our witch is more a humorous, bumbling confused character as opposed to terrible and mean,” she said.
