Armstrong’s background is different to most. The 62-year-old is better known for his prowess on the soccer pitch, in fact, he holds the Scottish record for most league matches, with 910.
Therefore, Armstrong only got into regular gift running in his 50s.
Armstrong used to run in the off-season to keep fit, but quickly found a love for gift running.
He first came to Australia to compete in 2010, he has returned four times since and is hoping to spend a full season here in the future.
“During the off-season I used to do a bit a running, just to keep fit,” Armstrong said.
“At first I hated it because I was so hopeless...(but then) I fell in love with it.
“I just got the bug for it.”
Despite his age, Armstrong showed he was still a threat when it comes to the open sprint.
He finished third in the masters 120m at Castlemaine before making the final of the Daylesford 100m Gift, finishing fifth.
“I was over the moon.
“For me, at my age, I was really pleased with that.”
Armstrong said he didn’t feel jet lag was a factor for him, his results over the years paying tribute to that.
“I’m not going to get any better than that,” Armstrong joked.
