Bright colours and iconic images of the city now welcome train travellers to Ballarat after local artist Casey Tosh and students from Ballarat Specialist School created a series of large murals on the rear of Victoria Bowls Club.

The club’s wall concrete wall, which faces on to the train line, was given a facelift last month with a welcome to Ballarat, lake and large swan, an image of musician Warren Ellis from the band the Bad Seeds, and other artworks including watermelons and narwhals.
Mr Tosh said the mural, which consists of five large sections, took a week to paint with a mixture of external house paint and spray paint.
After running an artist workshop at Ballarat Specialist School teaching students how to make spray paint stencils, the class came out to adorn their space on the wall.
“This area was a bit derelict and the club knew me from my early days of going to neighbouring East Ballarat Football Club so they commissioned me to create something for the wall,” he said.
“And I had previously worked at Ballarat Specialist School and knew the benefit for the kids in being involved, building their confidence and self belief, so I asked if they would be interested because it was such a big project and it was good to get other people involved.”
The club were keen to include some Ballarat icons with the artist then free to add his own motifs and ideas to the large blank canvas.
