The 22-year-old from Kingston landed a straight sets victory over American Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the opening round clash on Monday afternoon.
Hives, who received a wildcard entry into the tournament, was in top form and cruised to a 6-1 6-2 success over her more experienced rival.
She pockets $105,000 for making the second round.
She will now play France's Caroline Garcia in round two on Wednesday.
