Haywood, 31, had his wrists shackled behind his back and was dressed in a yellow jail jumpsuit when he appeared in the LA Superior Court on Wednesday.

The former professional boxer from the NSW Central Coast has been locked up in LA jails and mental facilities on $US1 million ($A1.4 million) bail since his October 14, 2016, arrest outside the Malibu house Kerr shared with her young son Flynn.

"I understand you are a little frustrated," Judge Alan Schneider told Haywood on Wednesday.

The court heard Haywood has had four different lawyers as his case crawled through the Californian legal system, with the latest attorney stepping down because of a conflict of interest.

Haywood agreed to return to court on February 5.

"Yes, that's fine," Haywood replied in a quiet voice.

A judge only declared Haywood fit to stand trial last September after concerns about his mental state.

His lawyer at the time, Ralf Jacobsen, said after the declaration Haywood would enter not guilty pleas by reason of insanity to attempted murder, aggravated mayhem and assault with a deadly weapon charges.

Haywood could spend the rest of his life locked up in the California hospital system if found guilty of the charges despite his insanity claim.

Authorities allege Haywood, who had not met Kerr, hoped to deliver a letter to the supermodel when he went to the Malibu home.

Kerr and Flynn were not home at the time of the incident.

When a security guard confronted Haywood outside the house a violent struggle erupted, authorities alleged.

Haywood allegedly grabbed the guard's knife and slashed the guard in the face.

The guard responded by shooting Haywood, according to authorities.

Kerr, who has since married Snapchat billionaire Evan Spiegel, no longer lives at the house.
