Hives, from Kingston near Ballarat, served out the match to give herself and fellow Australian Alison Bai victory in three sets on Thursday.
They defeated Luksika Kumkham (Thailand) and Evgeniya Rodina (Russia) 2-6 6-3 6-4.
The win is the second of the tournament for Hives after she won her singles opening round on Monday.
Hive lost to French 19th seed Caroline Garcia in the second round on Wednesday.
Hives and Bai combined in the Australian Open last year after earning a wildcard with a win the 2017 Bendigo ITF doubles title, but lost their opening rouind assignment.
