The amount of ‘donations’ dumped at the Norman Street Salvation Army Thrift Shop is enough to bring staff members to tears, but not in a good way.

“Some days you get here and you just want to cry,” one staff member said.
The thrift shop is often inundated in rubbish rather than donations. The issue has progressed to a point where staff members feel like they’re going backwards.
“It’s every day and every night. If people aren’t dumping rubbish in the morning they are coming in the evening to steal from what we’ve got from the back of the shop.
As found in previous reporting by The Courier, the Salvation Army spends upwards of six million dollars annually on rubbish removal across Australia.
The thrift shop by no means want people to stop donating, rather to donate appropriate items during their open hours.
“We get so many amazing items that we can return to the community and help support those who need it. But some of the things left for us to clean are horrendous.”
