Kas Fergus and Yvette Sari are putting on a Valentine’s Day singles night to help those looking for love in Ballarat and to raise money for ‘Hair Aid’.
The ‘Be My Valentine Singles Night’ is set out to be a friendly, non-threatening night of activities and hopefully romance, says Ms Fergus.
“The reason we thought it would be really good to run this event is because there are a lot of single people in Ballarat,” she said.
“Many of them don't like or don't know how to use online dating, so we wanted to provide an avenue for those people to get together and have a fun night rather than being lonely on Valentine’s Day.”
Coming from a mental health background, Ms Fergus knows the importance of getting out in the community and taking part in events like this.
“While a lot of people may not meet their valentine on the night, it's going to be a very welcoming evening where at the very least people can make some friends and have a laugh.”
Ms Fergus and Ms Sari are using the night as a fundraiser, as they aim to raise over $3000 each in order to travel abroad as volunteers with the charity ‘Hair Aid’.
Established in 2010, ‘Hair Aid’ is an organisation that travels to impoverished countries to teach hair-cutting skills to communities. These skills can be used to help families financially support themselves.
While neither Ms Fergus or Ms Sari possess any hair-cutting skills, they were both drawn to the charity.
“The people in these communities have so little, we just wanted to help in any way we could.
“I believe my experience in mental health and Yvette’s in social work can be used to help both the locals and the volunteers.”
The fundraising evening will take place on Valentine’s Day, February 14 at Moreshead Park in Redan from 7pm until 11pm.
Over 100 residents have already expressed interest in the evening.
“The community response has been fantastic so far, we just can’t wait for the evening to come and for people to be able to have a fun night regardless if they find their valentine.”
