When Anne Tudor and her partner Edie Mayhew decided to transition Edie into residential aged care, the difficult decision was made far easier knowing Mercy Place Ballarat was to be her new home. Edie moved into one of the small household living houses within Mercy Place Ballarat in September last year, and according to Anne is thriving in her new surroundings with her housemates.
“Very quickly, House 4 in Mercy Place Ballarat felt like home for Edie,” Anne says. “The house itself is beautiful and homely, her fellow housemates have become great friends, and the care she receives from her care companions and the other staff is considerate and of a very high standard.”
Edie also makes use of the café, grocery store, chapel, and landscaped outdoor areas that are located within Mercy Place Ballarat, features that contribute to the community feel of the residential home. The care available and community-style living at Mercy Place Ballarat clearly suits Edie, whose transition into residential aged care is being captured on film in a documentary series about dementia, Pulse of my Heart.

However, the home does not only house residents who have dementia. Mercy Place Ballarat was custom designed to accommodate residents requiring all levels of care needs. The home was purpose-built to feature 14 households of eight residents, each supported by a team of carers.
Mercy Place Ballarat service manager Andrew Howard says the small household style of living promotes independence, choice and relationships. Residents choose what times they rise and go to bed; they choose what and when they eat, and they are supported every step of the way by their permanent carers. “Residents have their own rooms and ensuites and they share their modern home with other like-minded residents,” he says. “Meals are home-cooked by their care companions and there really is that feeling of ‘home’ in every one of the houses here.
“The way Edie and her housemates have quickly settled into their new home is a testament to the care and the style of living that we provide here at Mercy Place Ballarat.”
