Releasing the debut album Sanctuary in November, singer-songwriter Matt Johnson has fused country and soul and with drum-driven, rock’n’roll sensibilities for his band Magpie Diaries.
Magpie Diaries took flight in 2012, after the sudden passing of Johnston’s friend. Revisiting his written memoirs and old music flourishes, he used the music to come to terms with the loss.
The new album has been expertly crafted by producer Matt Sherrod, the drummer for Crowded House who has performed regularly with Beck.
Magpie Diaries will perform in Ballarat on Friday night at The Eastern. Starts 8pm, support acts Steve Smytrh and Masco Sound System. Tickets $15.
