The fire broke at 3.20pm in Hitchcock Road and briefly threatened to spread to grass.
Buninyong CFA spokesman John McLeod said it appeared the car, a white old-style Holden, had been stolen and dumped in the bushland before being set alight with an unknown accelerant.
He said it was an incredibly dangerous thing to do, but it was fortunate Friday was a still afternoon and the fire was able to be contained before it threatened nearby houses or trees in the area. He said there had been numerous similar fires in the area in recent times.
Information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
