Seeing Australia’s leading horse trainer Darren Weir banned for four years was a monumental moment for Ballarat.
However, with all the doom and gloom in the early stages of the week came the news that fellow trainer Ciaron Maher would step in to fill the void.
This is great news not only for the direct employees at Forest Lodge, but the countless small businesses in Ballarat that benefit from horse racing.
There is no doubt it is a dark time in the industry, but hopefully this can be the biggest stepping stone in the right direction.
Elsewhere in Ballarat, we had yet another tragedy on our roads with a head-on crash on the Western Highway on Wednesday night.
This highlights a disastrous stretch for us, with eight people killed in eight different crashes since Christmas.
Here at The Courier, we gain no joy in bringing you such stories, but hope they can show the true dangers out on the roads.
After the lowest ever Victorian road toll in 2018, having such a calamitous start to this year is greatly disappointing.
