A fire erupted about 11.30pm on Monday, with five CFA units called in to tackle the blaze.
There was nobody inside the building at the time.
Smoke could be seen billowing outside, as police blocked off both Sturt Street and Raglan Street to traffic.
Ballarat City Fire Brigade senior station officer Shane Phillips said the rear of the building suffered extensive damage, while the front remained relatively unharmed.
A commercial laundromat operates at the rear, while the front is a 24-hour public laundromat.
Given the amount of linen and chemicals in the building, senior station officer Phillips said there were a lot of flammables to deal with.
“It was quite a dirty, messy job but we were able to extinguish it in about half an hour,” he said.
It is not yet known what started the blaze, although it is not believed to be suspicious.
A fire investigator will inspect the scene today.
Crews from Ballarat City, Lucas and Ballarat fire brigades attended.
