Part of a project to connect a new public toilet at the Waubra Recreation Reserve to sewerage systems, the trench is near a community barbecue area and primary school, and only had a flag rope around the perimeter.
After being alerted, Central Highlands Water dispatched an inspector to investigate, and secure fencing will be provided, according to a spokesperson.
“People’s safety is at the forefront of Central Highlands Water commitment to the community and we do not accept any unsafe work sites or behaviour,” they said.
“CHW is following up with the contractor directly regarding this matter.”
The construction project has reportedly been ongoing for months, and the trench was dug on Friday afternoon.
The toilet block is expected to be open in time for the beginning of the football season.
