The elevated rate of suicides in this city is an issue we cannot afford not to address.
Anybody who has lost a loved one, known a family or friend affected by premature death (and there are too many among us) will know just how devastating this loss is and how lasting the resonating damage.
Some people may wonder why The Courier continues to run stories about the need for extra help for victims of sexual abuse. Many more wish the problem would just go away. But it won't.
That is its toxic legacy.
Not all suicides are the victims of abuse but we know too many are, and if there are hundreds of young people whose innocence has been shattered that is potentially hundreds of blighted lives, hundreds of families living with the burden.
We need, as a community, to stop that ripple effect.
Our job at The Courier is to keep you informed about the issue.
Here are just a few of the recent features that will help you see the bigger picture.
