Not worthy of our city
The great city of Ballarat is renowned for its kindness, compassion and fairness. In total contrast to this is the abomination masquerading as sport called the Professional Bull Riders event at the Showgrounds on Saturday. Every animal protection agency on the planet including our own RSPCA is campaigning for an end to this barbaric exhibition of animal cruelty dressed up as entertainment. With good reason, this type of activity is banned in many states of the US, the UK and throughout Europe. When people attend ritualised animal cruelty such as the PBR event, we sully the reputation of our fair city and cheapen our very humanity.

Ugly repetition of car theft
I was really disgusted to read that a 92 year old lady had her car stolen even when it had a disabled sticker and then later was found burnt out. Now her independence has gone. Let’s only hope they catch up with these car thieves and when they do a lenghly jail sentence awaits these low life.

Time to get started
I write as a response to Bishop Paul Bird’s comment in The Courier, 7th March, “A Men’s healing centre would be unaffordable for the Ballarat Catholic diocese.” I find this quite astounding! As I am not a Catholic I do not know how the Catholic Church’s finances work. However, like many other members of the public I do read about and observe the riches of the Catholic Church. It is a very wealthy organization. If it is true that the Ballarat diocese cannot afford to do anything regarding the healing of its victims, can’t the Vatican come to the rescue? And after all Cardinal Pell did promise the Ballarat survivors, that he would attend to the provision of a healing centre in Ballarat.
Bishop Bird has done nothing to improve the public’s view of the horror of the Church’s abuse. It is ridiculous to say there are already facilities at St. John of God Hospitalthat can deal with the trauma. They are far from adequate given the volume of work. I can only try to imagine how the victims of your clergy’s abuse must feel when they hear these comments. They have worked and persisted against all odds to bring the Church’s crimes into the light, only to be met with such crushing comments. The Bishop has a magnificent opportunity to do something good on behalf of the Church. Please step up and find the money and get the ball rolling. You don’t have to build a grand “hospital”, straight off but you could get something started if you really were committed.
