In a world that is becoming more globalised, automated, interconnected and fast-paced and with 75 per cent of the fastest growing occupations require science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills and knowledge, it is critical that we are supporting student engagement, retention and achievement in STEM.
Since opening its doors the Ballarat Tech School based at Federation University Australia’s SMB Campus is delivering innovative learning programs to thousands of local students, providing learning programs that are based on the STEM principles.
They are also connected to the industries that have been identified as offering the greatest economic and job growth potential for both the local area and within Victoria. These include health science, new energy technologies, food and fibre, advanced manufacturing and information technology.
Engaging students in programs based on the real world application, designed with industry and STEM skills gives them the opportunity to practice and experiment using collaborative problem solving and design thinking.
Students undertake this while using the latest technology, to develop in them the skills, abilities and knowledge needed to successfully navigate a world of opportunity. Students from 17 partner schools in the Ballarat area access the Ballarat Tech School throughout the year for specialised programs.
“Supporting our partner schools in opening up a world of possibility for students in being a designer, innovator, technologist or scientist to improve socially, economically and environmentally how we live and work is essential as they are our future community leaders,” said Sofia Fiusco, director of Ballarat Tech School.
“When students spend time at the Ballarat Tech School the outcomes they produce are critical, creative and designed in response to a real world brief. Students are learning how to rapidly prototype solutions, personalise applications to open up a world of accessibility, learning how to turn an interest in game design into a business, to automate to improve repeatedly, program robots to design new business structures and have the ability to create products for new markets from waste resources to food research and development.”
Young people easily adapt to technology, but unlike the adults around them they have not experienced the dramatic change that has come from access to new technologies.
The Ballarat Tech School is committed to delivering experiences that shows the potential of technology and enable students to expand their capabilities so that they can design their future with confidence.
