Emergency services were called to the incident in Creswick about 9pm on Wednesday evening to reports of a garage fire on Reed Street.
Ballarat City senior station officer Ben Townsend said the blaze had spread from its initial ignition point in the garage to the roof cavity before firefighters arrived on scene.
Upon arrival, crews from Ballarat City, Clunes, Creswick and Kingston had a large task on their hands, battling the blaze for about an hour-and-a-half before bringing it under control.
"A fair amount of work was needed to clean up the scene and make the area safe," Mr Townsend said.
Police media confirmed the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined however it is being treated as suspicious.
A crime scene guard has been established and fire investigators will attend the scene on Thursday morning to investigate.
Ambulance Victoria confirmed they were called to the fire, however no one was treated on scene.
The home was managed by the Department of Health and Services.
