PASSENGERS may not find it very imaginative, but at least they will know when they've arrived at their stop.
Ballarat's second railway station, to be built in Gillies St, has been named "Wendouree".
Chosen from more than 100 community entries, the moniker received the nod yesterday ahead of suggestions including "Wendyville", "Swan Lake", "Queen and Empress" and "Moneghetti".
Joan Munson, 82, was among 19 residents to nominate "Wendouree" as their top choice for the $11 million station.
"I thought it should be named after the place, otherwise people get confused," she said.
Ballarat West MLA Karen Overington said plans for the station, to be operational in mid 2008, would be made public soon.
"People will also notice action taking place on the site soon, including the roads in, the car parking and the actual building of the station itself," she said.
The Wendouree Railway Station will be located about 4 1/2km from the Ballarat Railway Station in Lydiard St.
Once completed, it will service about 27,000 people in the Wendouree area, include 200 car parking spaces, a new platform, bus and taxi bays, bike racks and lockers.
Ms Overington said the naming of the station recognised the importance of the Wendouree region to the city of Ballarat.
She said entries were judged on their relevance to the local area, as well as ensuring the name was easily recognisable for residents and visitors.
"The 19 entrants that nominated Wendouree should be proud of their contribution, as the name will be seen by all of the Ballarat residents and visiting passengers who will use the train station every year."
Winners received a return V/Line double pass to Melbourne and an invitation to the station's official opening.
