A Powercor spokesperson has told The Courier a cause has not yet been determined for power outages that affected thousands of homes in and around Ballarat this afternoon.
The spokesperson said crews patrolled the power line and progressively restored affected customers.
Power was restored to all customers by 6.56pm.
"We thank customers for their patience while crews worked to restore power," the spokesperson said.
UPDATE, 7.20pm:
Power has been restored to homes in and around Ballarat after some residents experienced more than four hours of outages.
The cause of the outages has not yet been revealed.
UPDATE, 7pm:
Towns surrounding Ballarat remain without power as Powercor continues to investigate the cause of an outage.
More than 450 homes in and around Lexton, Waubra and Learmonth are currently affected.
Powercor estimates power to be restored to these homes at 10.30pm.
EARLIER, 5pm:
A Powercor spokesperson has told The Courier the cause of a power outage around Ballarat remains unknown.
Investigators have been working to determine restore power to homes across the western region for more than two hours.
Around 2500 customers are currently without power, a drop from more than 5000 at 3pm.
It is estimated power will be restored at 6.30pm.
"Hopefully with people coming home from work the power at more homes will be restored in the not too distant future," a Powercor spokesperson said.
EARLIER: POWERCOR investigators are working at a substation near the corner of Norman Street and Creswick Road as more than 5000 customers are without power across the western region.
Customers as far south as Cressy to near Newstead in the north are currently without power.
Most of the outages have occurred in the Ballarat region with more than 1700 customers in Wendouree affected and more than 1200 in Miners Rest.
Areas including Creswick, Clunes and Talbot are all experiencing power outages.
Powercor said it was investigating the outages but at this stage no timeframe has been given for when power will be returned.
Central Ballarat has not been affected.
Its website says outages could be experienced until 6.30pm.
