Ballarat Crime Investigation Unit says there is likely a link between the fires which have all happened overnight since January 29.

Car fires have occurred in Lydiard Street North, January 29, Ligar Street on February 1 and March 7, Seymour Street on March 10 and overnight, Havelock Street on March 11, Armstrong Street North on March 16, Soldiers Hill on 16 March and Clarendon Street on March 18.

Inspector Dan Davison said police understand the community's concerns over the recent spate and were working hard to catch the offender or offenders,

"We have deployed additional patrols to the area in an effort to detect any offenders and deter further incidents," Inspector Davison said.

"We take these incidents very seriously and are working hard to identify anyone who may be involved.

"If you see any suspicious activity or someone loitering in the streets at night in the Soldiers Hill area please call Triple Zero (000)."

Police are also investigating the theft of a car from the Federation University car park which was found burned out this morning at Humffray Street South in Mount Pleasant.
