The team has been hard at work since January bringing in new players and gelling as a unit. Their first test as a team will be a rugby 12s tournament in Geelong on Saturday, March 30. Team captain Ben Inglis says the team has come a long way from last season.
"This year has been a massive step up," he said.
Looking towards their tournament in Geelong, Inglis acknowledges the competition may be a challenge for the new group.
"We've got a lot of new players," he said.
"It's going to be our first real hit-out as a team - we know there's going to be some quality sides playing but we're still hoping for success on the field."
The Highlanders first game of the Victorian Rugby Championship will be played at Doug Dean Reserve against the Melton Warriors on April 27 at 3pm.
