Step forward for heritage

AN AGREEMENT promoting Ballarat's Indigenous heritage has been described as a milestone for the local Aboriginal community.A Memorandum of Understanding, signed yesterday, was developed by the Sovereign Hill Museums Association and Kirrit Barreet Aboriginal Art and Cultural Centre.The MOU has a statement of recognition of the region's indigenous people, the Wathurong, and the Indigenous people who have made Ballarat their home.Sovereign Hill chief executive officer Jeremy Johnson said recognition and acknowledgement were important first steps in any relationship."This MOU will provide a framework for Sovereign Hill and the Kirrit Barreet to collaborate in areas of mutual interest and to promote increased awareness and understanding of the indigenous heritage of the Goldfields," he said.Kirrit Barreet chief executive officer Karen Heap described the MOU as a milestone for the Ballarat Aboriginal community."This is a great opportunity for us to work together in achieving recognition for the Aboriginal community and reconciliation for the wider community," she said."We look forward to achieving the objectives of the MOU and to further develop and grow the relationship with Sovereign Hill into the future."
