The body of a 49-year-old motorcyclist was found in the Mount Mercer area early on Sunday morning, while a cyclist believed to be in his sixties was killed on the Creswick Road south of Clunes on Sunday afternoon.
The victims, both male, bring the death toll on Victoria's roads to 76 for less than three months of 2019. At the same point last year, there had been 53 fatalities on the roads, marking a 43 per cent spike in the number of deaths so far this year.
A passerby called emergency services at 9.04am after seeing the wreckage of a Harley Davidson motorcycle on the verge of the Gumley Road, around two kilometres north of the Rokewood-Shelford Road.
On a remote section of the road a few kilometres away from the Mount Mercer wind farm, the rider appears to have lost control on a bend curving around to the left as he drove north.
The vehicle collided with a barbed wire fence a few metres away from the road.
The time of the accident has not been established, but police at the scene believed it may have happened several hours before the 000 call.
The deceased man is believed to be local. Police have informed his next of kin but his name has not yet been publicly released.
Police said the road is not a known danger spot and had been sealed relatively recently.
A different section of the road was the scene of a crash in late January when a 26-year-old was killed after her car rolled.
Ballarat Highway Patrol Senior Constable Jeremy Hancock said they had not yet been able to establish if speed was a factor in the crash. The Major Collision Investigation Unit is looking into the accident and will submit a report for the coroner.
Meanwhile yesterday afternoon, a cyclist in his sixties died following a collision with a Jeep.
Ambulance and police were called to the accident around 8km south of Clunes on the Creswick Road shortly before three pm. The man died at the scene. Police investigators believe the Jeep was travelling south towards Creswick when it collided with a cyclist.
The male driver of the vehicle is assisting police with their inquiries.
In 2012, Doug Garley, 56, a long-time member of the Ballarat-Sebastopol Cycling Club, was tragically killed on the same stretch of the Creswick-Clunes Road when he was struck by a car travelling in the same direction.
Last weekend there were four fatalities on regional roads surrounding Ballarat.
Two Kyneton men were killed last Saturday night at Lancefield while another two people were killed last Sunday, at Daisy Hill, near Maryborough and on the Midland Highway near Lethbridge.
