A virtual reality experience is a key feature in the Vision Australia Ballarat exhibition on Thursday. The program will allow people to see what life can look like with glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy and how Vision Australia could make simple environmental changes to help.

Changes could be more contrast in ornaments, blinds and suitably-placed downlights to reduce glare, bigger photos or light strips on the edges of steps and stairs.

Vision Australia Ballarat community relationships manager Michelle Ward said basic changes could make a big difference to quality of life for people with low vision.

Ms Ward said the expo would help showcase the support and help available for people with low vision, as well as those who were blind, in the community.

"Early support and understanding is really important with a condition. A lot of people often come to us with low vision and say they wish they had come here earlier," Ms Ward said.

"We're here to help people on their journey because their vision will keep changing and we can help them adapt."

A cooking demonstration will feature new talking technology like digital scales, a themometre and microwave for the kitchen. This is part of a work shop on accessibility about the home.

There will also be work shops on adaptive technologies and expert advice on the National Disability Insurance Scheme and My Aged Care.

Ms Ward said there were lots of great support gadgets and mobility aids for people to discover, including a newly updated audio library.

Orthoptists, who work in functional assessments and programs for people with low vision, will also be available for advice.

The expo is also a chance for people to share personal experience over a barbecue.
