Research in applied mathematics, environmental science, civil engineering, environmental science and management, clinical science, human movement and sport, and nursing were ranked as well above world standard.
It's a massive turnaround for some of the five-star sectors, particularly the environmental science areas, which were ranked well-below world standard just three years ago.
Research in to artificial intelligence and image processing, and research from the university's medical and health science schools received a four star rating, considered above the world average.
"From never having achieved a five star rating to achieving seven - these outstanding results reflect our focus on producing world-leading research that has a real impact on people's lives," said Fed Uni vice chancellor Professor Helen Bartlett.
Professor Bartlett said the ERA report assessed hundreds of research findings released over the past three years.
Research had helped to save lives in hospital, keep miners safe, prevent sporting injuries, improve water efficiency, steer the evolution of the men's shed movement, giving students a voice in school policy and tell stories of our history.
About 1945 pieces of research from Federation University alone were assessed for the 2018 study.
"This is a fantastic result for a regional university - we're producing world-class research in our local communities that can be applied to people living anywhere in the world," said deputy vice chancellor of research and innovation Professor Chris Hutchison.
"Our challenge now is to export not only our research but the value of regional universities to Australia's reputation for innovation."
Alongside the high-achieving sectors, nine research areas were ranked at world standard - mathematical sciences, information and computing sciences, studies in human society, psychology and cognitive sciences, pure mathematics, education systems, sociology, psychology and historical studies.
Areas that were below or well below world standards include history and archaeology, studies in creative arts and writing, commerce management tourism services, education, engineering, biological sciences and earth sciences.
The state's highest ranking university for research was the University of Melbourne with 114 research areas rated above or well above world standard.
