E.N., Scarsdale.
The movements of the Australasian grebe (little grebe) are poorly known.
There's no regular migration pattern, although there's a noticeable reduction here from autumn, especially from smaller dams. On some local wetlands they seem to be present year-round, but such places are relatively few.
Their movements are related to food: small fish, water snails, leeches, water bugs and beetles, mudeyes and similar aquatic creatures. They get these from well-vegetated lakes and dams. Reduced plant growth and invertebrate populations from autumn probably forces them to move to wetlands with more food. Such places might be towards the coast.
