The Ballarat 23-year-old has a firm grip on the red jersey midway through the eight-stage Le Tour de Langkawi in Malaysia.
Lyons took the lead in the king of the mountain category on the opening day, a 176.9km-stage with four climbs.
He made a decisive move on stage four - his second time in a breakaway - to take what should enable him to retain the jersey to the finish.
Riding for Oliver's Real Food Racing, Lyons said it was amazing to have a jersey in the team's first 2.HC classified event, which has a relatively flat finish.
He said there had been pressure to retain it, but hopefully they could continue to do it.
Lyons, who began the year in the national road championships in Ballarat and then contested the Herald Sun Tour, won the king of the mountain title in the Tour de Tochigi in Japan.
