The venue is hosting an afternoon of musicians playing their best known and most loved works. Called Sing Us A Song, twelve singers, songwriters and talented instrumentalists will perform three songs, either their own work or a work they have a special connection to.

Organiser Brodie Glen says the idea for the gig came to him when he was with friends at the hotel on a Sunday recently.

"There was nothing on, so a bunch of locals jumped up and did a few songs each, and then another couple walked in and they sang a few songs, and it ended up being absolutely fantastic," he says.

"You know the Million Dollar Quartet, where Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis all happened to walk by Sun Studios at the same time and they hit record? This is Ballarat's answer to that, you know?

"We've got Pat McCabe and we've got Mick Trembath, the older brigade; and then we've got Ari Lane, we've got Freya Hollick and Marc Oswin - a generation younger than the first guys I mentioned. We've got FLOC, a young hip-hop artist - just a bunch of great artists."

Brodie Glen says the rise of The Eastern as a musical centre is an exciting chance for new artists to be seen in town.

"Ballarat really punches above its weight as a live music hub and the bands, the calibre of the music that is going through there is just fantastic," he says.

"It's exciting to turn up to a venue on a Wednesday or a Thursday night and there's an open mic night and you'll ask 'what's going on,' and someone will say 'oh so-and-so is jumping up,' and you can watch them, and you might end up on their drums for the second set."

Mick Trembath will be playing three of his 'songs with a story' on Sunday afternoon.

He says the event is a chance for older musicians to meet younger performers and tell them how much they enjoy their work.

"With this gig, it's an opportunity to introduce ourselves and strengthen the community; often you hear about people, or they hear about you, but there's no chance to go and say g'day."

Sing Us A Song starts at 3pm this Sunday at The Eastern Hotel, Humffray Street North. Entry is free.
