The blond youngster, believed to be aged about nine, showed up at a home in Highett about 2.45am on Thursday when residents of the property took him to hospital for a check up.
The boy, with shoulder-length straight hair and blue eyes, was described as "non verbal" by police, who launched an urgent search for his parents.
The "concerned parents" have since come forward, police said.
