BALLARAT Miners young gun Anthony Fisher has rejected an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship to stay in Ballarat. The 17-year-old opted to remain under the tutelage of Ballarat Holden Miners head coach Guy Molloy after the AIS offered a 2012 basketball contract.Fisher, who is studying his VCE at Ballarat High School, said it was a tough decision but he felt he could learn a lot more on his home court.“I thought about going to college in America and the AIS would be great too, but I think I’ve got more options and a bigger potential for variety here in Ballarat with the Miners and Guy Molloy,” Fisher said. “And being close to home is important too.”His scholarship offer follows an impressive performance at an Australian development camp earlier this year.Fisher has climbed the Ballarat junior basketball ranks, including the Ballarat Basketball Club representative program, and is a multiple Vic Country player at national level.Molloy promoted the promising youngster to the South East Australian Basketball League with the Miners in late May for experience.Fisher built up court time in six matches.“He’s as good as any player I have seen at the junior level for quite some time,” Molloy said.“This will give Anthony an opportunity to develop his game under elite conditions with quality senior players Dan Joyce, Shaun Bruce and Jared Scoines.”The Miners start pre-season training in late January in the lead up to the 2012 season in March.Follow @Melanie_Whelan
