British export Stewart Maylett made his debut for the club in its round 4 clash against Fawkner SC in Football Victoria men's state league three north-west reserves.
It was the first time in six months he'd stepped foot on a pitch since moving over from England in 2018. And after being on the receiving end of an early goal from Fawkner SC, it seemed his comeback match would end less than ideal.
But the 29-year-old soon (and literally) found his feet.
After scoring off a header from a corner in the 7th minute mark to tie the game, Maylett steered through a second eight minutes later to give his team a 2-1 lead.
"I was kind of liking my debut at that point," he told the Courier.
"The rest of the way through the game I was hoping to get a third to make it a hat-rick, but I think my fitness dropped off a bit in the second half."
His two goal effort provided the backbone for the Vikings who went on to win the match 4-3.
The hot performance propelled Maylett into the clubs first division side the following week where he took part in the side's FFA Cup loss against Murray United.
Having played at a semi-professional level back in England, Maylett is hoping to become a mainstay in the club's top team and make an impact as soon as he can.
"I don't believe I'd be out of place jumping straight in now, but I'd like to get a little more fitness behind me first," he said.
"The last club I played for was a similar standard, but the coaches here are very enthusiastic and its good to have people like that to push you."
Sebastopol Vikings coach Michael Goodman heaped praise on his new recruit saying once he gets a few more games under his belt he'll be an asset to the club.
"From an attacking stand point he's got good technique and if we can get him in those dangerous areas he should continue to get goals," he said.
