This win was the 34-year-old 's fourth team national championship and only adds to his seemingly never ending list of accolades.

Victoria defeated New South Wales in the final best-of-five fight of the tournament. It would all come down to O'Mara, who secured the win by defeating current Australian individual champion Jayson Chaplin.

O'Mara said this win stands out as NSW has been dominant over the past few years of competition.

"It was a really good matchup," he said.

"It all came down to the final match so it was really quite tight until the very end. It's a testament to how hard both teams worked and prepared leading up to the championship."

O'Mara's initial love for the sport stemmed from a love of anything sword-fighting related as a child.

"When I was younger I was always into sword-fighting," he said.

"I had tried to do kendo when I was eight years old but I was told I was too young and in Ballarat we didn't have any fencing or any other types of sword-fighting sports.

"When I was 10, my school principal at the time was the local kendo instructor and he decided to hold the first kids kendo class."

O'Mara trained throughout his schooling and became fully committed to the sport after a trip to Japan.

"I guess it got really serious the first time I went to Japan when I was 18," he said.

"That's when my love for kendo really took off and from there I've been competing nationally and internationally ever since."

O'Mara has seen his sport grow exponentially from when he began and is excited to see where it goes in Australia in the coming years.

"My first grading I ever had for the entry level ranking had four people competing. Now the most recent grading held in Melbourne had 140 people going for the ranking."

"It's fantastic, the more people you have doing any sport the more you can have it grow and more exciting it gets."
