Ross Paterson was bailed at the Ballarat Magistrates Court on Wednesday with conditions he provide a $500 surety and live at a fixed address.

The court was told Paterson, originally of Werribee, allegedly stole a bag containing bank cards from a car at Werribee in August 2017, and used a card to buy $2000 worth of items.

In March 2018 Paterson allegedly used a pocket knife to slash two car tyres in Werribee, while in November, he allegedly stole a chainsaw sharpener from Bunnings at Hoppers Crossing.

Police allege Paterson failed to appear at court on the dishonesty offences. He was arrested on Tuesday for four outstanding warrants.

Paterson appeared in the dock wearing track pants and a singlet, and was flanked by three custody officers.

Defence lawyer Scott Belcher said his client had not re-offended since he moved to Ballarat to support his sister and her child.

Magistrate Barry Schultz bailed Paterson for a plea hearing in Ballarat in May.
